It has been a WHILE since I have put some real thoughts down on paper, gave you an update on what’s been going on with me and welcomed you again into this crazy wonderful life that I have. This is going to be the start of a Bi-Monthly blog post that is going to give you a little more personal insight into my daily life filled with training, traveling, food prepping and eating as well as some recommendations of all my favorite books, blog posts, articles and other informational sources in which I see benefit throughout my own life.
I am really excited to start to share a lot more with you and open up to you guys more often, in hopes to continue to inspire and be a positive light in each of your lives. So as promised, let’s get started with a little insight into whats going on in the big aspects of my life currently:
This time of year is a really interesting time for team training. Starting in January, all 6 members of the team are together 5-6 days a week for full days of training. We are together for training, for meals, for hanging out, for EVERYTHING. As soon as the Games are over we all tend to take a little break to breathe. We take some time off from training, from being on the same schedule and honestly just from each other.
The amount of time that we spend together throughout the very long CrossFit season, absolutely turns us into a family. We know everything about each other and with that comes the same frustrations and annoyances that come with any family. Taking a little time for ourselves and spending a lot more time with our personal and immediate families, gives us all a little break and re-fuels the fire for the season. Within the last week or so, we have started to coordinate with each other a little bit more about training and have started to meet up as a group. This is not due to the fact that we think that it is necessary to start team training again right away, but moreso because we honestly do love being together and training with each other is always more fun than training alone.
Personally, I have been working on my strength (specifically squatting, benching and pulling strength) as well as fine tuning some skill work and working with my gymnastic endurance. I noticed in myself throughout the season that I really start to fatigue quickly in higher rep, quick gymnastic movements which overall slowed my team down significantly. I also was unable to squat last year consistently until after regionals (bad case of patellar tendonitis) so I am working on building my squat strength and endurance back up as well. I have been working with The Active Life coaches from New York to help to clean up my movements patterns and program for me specifically to what my personal weaknesses are. Overall, my specific training goals currently are to lessen the holes in my game that I noticed throughout last season to make myself as strong of a team member as I can to get us back on top of that podium.
This is the fall of traveling for me! I love everything about it. Just recently I returned back from a week long trip in Switzerland where I was lucky enough to not only travel around the country a little bit but also to host a couple seminars and coach classes in local CrossFit gyms. I had the most amazing experience with the local athletes by getting to share my story with them, hear their stories from their own CrossFit experiences and teach them to think about strengthening their core and approaching their workouts in a whole new way. I love getting out into the community and being able to meet people and be inspired by them in my own training.
While in Switzerland, I was also given the opportunity to to compete in the Swiss Alpine Battle which took place in the middle of the Swiss Alps in Villars-sur-Ollon, Switzerland. This was an AMAZING competition which was run near perfectly with such a beautiful venue location it was almost hard to be able to focus on the workouts! Not only was I able to compete with Patrick Vellner as my partner- but the events were at a venue with a beautiful glass wall that overlooked the Swiss mountains and one of the events was a trail run through the Swiss alps themselves. The incline and the altitude change was REAL during this trail run, but luckily Pat was not even breathing heavy and kept reminding me to look around at our surroundings and check out all the cows and sheep that were nearby. Thankfully I was partnered with the current 4th fittest man in the world, so he was able to pull me to the finish of the race. Literally. The whole competition we focused on having a great time, doing our best but most importantly appreciateing the opportunity. We ended up with a second place finish and LOTS of chocolate and cheese along the way. 😉
I will be traveling to New York to work with Dr.Sean from Active Life in person and record some media for them, and the meeting my sister in Boston to see a Bruno Mars Concert 😉
Traveling home to Louisville, KY to watch my brothers first IronMan! This may be one of my favorite trips this fall!
Just confirmed that Jon (boyfriend) and I will be traveling to Rome, Italy for 8 days! I couldn’t be more excited about this trip and to do nothing before the holidays but eat pasta, pastries and drink wine.
There are a few more things in the works that have not yet been confirmed, but I’ll keep ya updated along the way 😉
As most of you know, for most of the year I follow Renaissance Periodization, which is also known as, RP Strength. I have been following their eating plans and templates since 2015 and I have seen some great success from it.
During the fall season, I always need to adjust my templates a little bit because my training volume typically decreases and my goals for a couple months change overall. The fall is also the time that I let loose a little bit, allowing myself to not be as structured in my meal plans andhave some fun with recipes and treats 😉 I still have an RP template for this fall but I don’t worry as much about following it to perfection and just allow myself to have a little more freedom. As I do this and discover good recipes along the way- I will start to share my favorites with you. I will continue to share my meals through my other social media outlets as well but when I create or come across a recipe that turns into one of my favorites- I’ll make sure that you guys don’t miss out!
This month (October) I will also be doing a giveaway on my Instagram page so that one lucky follower will be given some RP templates of their own for free! I am really excited about this and I can’t wait to help one of you get started on your super easy to follow nutrition plan! Keep checking my Instagram page (Lindybarber) for the contest!
Enough for now!
